For 2020, we are introducing a new blog series that casts the spotlight on the incredible teams we have operating across the globe, giving you an inside peek into their lives, interests and background in the language industry.
In this edition of Meet the Team, we are featuring a member of our Sales group. Kristin Gutierrez is a dedicated Senior Global Strategic Account Manager based in California, and is extremely active in the industry (most recently she was on stage at LocWorld41, check out her insights from the event here!).
We caught up with Kristin, and learned some surprising things! Check out her responses below to discover how she got started in the business, the name of her 22-foot Airstream and more:
Q: What do you enjoy doing outside of the office?
A: We have two Airstreams… Our first one is a 30-foot Classic we named Señor Plata which we lived in full time parked in our backyard for over a year while we ran our 3-bedroom house like a hotel on Airbnb. The second one we purchased earlier this year and is a 22-foot Sport we named Finca. (It’s very common in the Airstream community to name your trailers). We travel with Finca to local beaches and overnight camping trips because she’s light and can be towed by our SUV. Our 30’ trailer weighs 10,000 pounds so we don’t move him often. For the past year we’ve had a tenant living in it full-time but since she’s moving out soon, we plan to rent it to travel nurses next.
Q: How long have you been with ULG?
A: I’ve been with ULG since August 2019. I came here with 15 years localization industry experience. Prior to joining ULG, I worked at NetApp supporting the Globalization and Content Strategy team, a client-side role which helped diversify my experience. The rest of my tenure has been on the vendor side which has given me a unique cross-dimensional view of how best to support our clients. Additionally, for the past three years I have held the role of Program Director, Chapter & Global Growth for Existing Chapters within Women in Localization.
Q: What is your favorite part of your job? Why?
A: When my clients can say they’ve seen an increase in international revenue thanks to globalization efforts or decrease in spend from process improvements, that’s when my day is made. It doesn’t happen overnight, and it takes hand-in-hand collaboration executing projects, tracking metrics, analyzing data, and conceptualizing new ways to help them to communicate their accomplishments to Executive teams. But as a value-added globalization partner with our client’s best interests in mind, we are here for the long-haul.
Q: Why did you decide to work in the translation industry?
A: After graduating college I was living in downtown Chicago barely making ends meet working retail at a high-end department store. So, I plastered my resume everywhere and took every interview that came my way. SDL was creating their first “Inside Sales” role and I was hired to be the guinea pig. Three promotions within SDL later and the rest is history. I love this industry and the friendships I’ve made along the way. I’ve been fortunate to have the best bosses, work with the smartest teams, travel internationally, and have been allowed to let my creativity flourish whether its working for Women in Localization, creating podcasts and webinars, to speaking at conferences and collaborating with industry leaders. I feel truly blessed. Working from home is the icing on the cake!
